Challenge
OD practitioners needed a free, self-directed way to explore foundational competences and specialisms — not another static brochure, but a living educational app they could return to over months.
Approach
We helped shape and deliver The OD App as a curated six-step journey: lay of the land, reflection, personal competence profile, self-assessment, development plan, then specialisms and community feedback. Content centres on 11 foundational OD competences plus an expanding set of practitioner-authored specialisms, with accounts so registered users can save drafts and revisit their plan.
Outcome
A public community resource at theodapp.com — sponsored by Oxford-based Quality & Equality — that invites global OD practitioners to own their mastery path without mandatory external checklists.
The OD App is a free community resource for Organization Development practitioners. Its purpose is to support self-inquiry around practice patterns, motivation, and aspirations — then turn that reflection into a concrete development path.
Two content pillars
- 11 foundational OD competences — building blocks of professional practice, each with descriptions and elements “in action.”
- OD specialisms — an emerging set of related practice areas, often contributed by practitioners who share how they arrived there and what mastery looks like.
The journey
Users move through a guided process: get the lay of the land, reflect and learn, build a personal OD competence profile, self-assess against that profile, draft a 12–18 month development plan, explore specialisms, and give feedback so the app stays a living community tool.
Three design commitments shape the product: it is first an educational tool, it is user-centric and self-directed (not compulsory competences from an external body), and it is a free community resource for the global OD field.
